Cookies on LingoHop

The short version

LingoHop uses one cookie by default — a session cookie that keeps you signed in. Our analytics provider doesn't use cookies at all. We set advertising cookies only if you explicitly agree when asked, and declining changes nothing about how the site works.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small piece of text your browser stores on your device when you visit a website. Sites use cookies for things like remembering you're signed in, saving preferences, or — on many other sites — tracking you between visits.

The cookie we use

• Session cookie— set when you sign in. It holds a signed token that proves to LingoHop that you're you. Without it, you'd have to re-sign-in on every page load. It expires when the session ends, and is set with HttpOnly and Secureflags. We don't use it for tracking.

Advertising cookies — only if you say yes

We run search ads so people can find LingoHop. To know which ads brought someone who actually watched a video, we can load Google's advertising tag, which sets cookies under google.com and googleadservices.com.

We ask first. Until you accept, the tag is never loaded and those cookies are never set — declining isn't a setting we honour after the fact, it means the code never runs. Your answer is remembered in your browser's local storage so we don't ask again.

Declining costs you nothing.Every part of LingoHop works exactly the same either way. It only means we can't tell which ad brought you.

Third-party services

We use Plausible Analytics to count page views in aggregate. Plausible doesn't use cookiesand doesn't track you between visits or across other sites.

When you play a YouTube video embedded on LingoHop, YouTube may set its own cookies under youtube.com. Those are governed by YouTube's own cookie and privacy policies, not ours.

Turning cookies off

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings, but if you block the LingoHop session cookie you won't be able to stay signed in. If signing in matters to you, we'd recommend leaving it enabled and clearing it when you want to sign out.

Changes

If we add or change cookies, we'll update this page and bump the “last updated” date.
